용머리쪽에서 바라본 산방산


  산방산(山房山)

  한라산 백록담에 있던 산봉우리가 뽑혀 던져졌다는 전설어린 산이다. 높이 395m의 기암절벽으로 이루어진 산 남쪽 중턱에 바위굴이 있다. 영주10경의 하나인 산방굴사이다.
 
  이 산방굴사는 예로부터 불상을 모셔서 수도해 온 곳이다. 굴 안에서는 맑은 석간수가 떨어진다. 이 물은 여신 산방덕이 인간세상의 시달림을 받고 바위가 되어 흘리는 눈물이라고 전해진다. 산방산 바위 벼랑에는 희귀한 암벽식물들이 자생하여 천연기념물 제182-5호 지구로 지정 보호되고 있다.

  가까운 대정고을에 추사 김정희 등의 유적이 있고, 앞 바닷가 속칭 용머리에 하멜기념비가 있다. 멀리 가파도, 마라도가 보인다.

MT. SANBANG

  Legend says that this mountain was the peak of MT. HALLA before it was broken off and thrown to this spot. This legend explains how WHITE DEER LAKE(the crater of MT. HALLA) was formed. Lo-395 meter high mountain of steep and jagged cliff sides is a small lava grotto. This grotto is known as SANBANG TEMPLE GROTTO and is counted as one of the TEN GRAND VIEWS OF JEJU.
  Here at SANBANG GROTTO SHRINE is a statue of the Buddha to which, from ancient times, people have come to spiritually cleanse themselves and pay respect to Buddha. Inside the grotto is a small spring of crystal clear water issuing from the rocks. It is claimed that these waters are the tears of a heavenly being named SAN BANG DOK who is said to have accepted all the misery and sufferings of the Human World.
  Among the creviced cliffs are found a variety of rare plants generally associated with such exposed conditions. The area is designated as Natural Monument #182-5.
  In the nearby village of TAEJONG are located the only known works (two in number) of the Confucian scholar and caligrapher KIM CHONG HUI who was exiled to Jeju during the Chosun Dynasty for 9 years.
  In front of the mountain is a ridge called the DRAGON\'S HEAD on which stands the memoreial to HENDRICK HAMEL, the first westerner to write and introduce Korea to the west. In the distance may be seen KAP\'A ISLAND (closest) and MARA ISLAND (the most southern land mass of the Republic).
